monoppix in VPC displays strangely

I booted up monoppix 1.1.8 in a VPC tonight. The desktop wallpaper and icons looked quite “grainy” (but was otherwise usable), however when I launched Monodevelop the text was un-readable. I played around with a few display settings from the knoppix boot prompt but without success. Anybody seen this before, know what might be causing it and/or how to fix it. Searching for “mono” and “grainy” returned lots of hits on photography, and I was unable to refine my search to get anything meaningful.
